Do YOU know that \u201cReading a proverb takes only a few seconds;\u00a0applying<\/span><\/i>\u00a0a proverb can take a lifetime?\u201d I’ve attempted to pull some of the rich spiritual nuggets from the first chapter of\u00a0 the book of Wisdom written by King Solomon.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

BACKGROUND OF SOLOMON<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

    \n
  • Solomon was born the second son to David and Bathsheba (2 Sam. 12:24) and reigned 40 years as the third king of Israel (1 Ki. 11:41-43).<\/span><\/li>\n
  • When sought by the Lord for a request, Solomon eagerly asked for wisdom (1 Ki. 3:5-9) and his request pleased God (1 Ki. 3:10-13).<\/span><\/li>\n
  • Solomon\u2019s downfall was his love for women (1 Ki. 11:1), which turned his heart away from the Lord (1 Ki. 11:4), brought adversaries from the Lord (1 Ki. 11:14-40) and eventually lead to the demise of the united kingdom (1 Ki. 11:11-13).<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    BACKGROUND OF PROVERBS<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

      \n
    • The NT quotes Proverbs at least fourteen times. James is the closest NT book that resembles Proverbs.<\/span><\/li>\n
    • The Hebrew word for proverb\u00a0(marshal)<\/i>\u00a0means “comparison, similar, parallel.” Proverbs are based on and an application of the Law of God (a skillful use of knowledge in everyday life-wisdom\u00a0\u201c). The rational tone is continually stressed by the importance of revering and trusting the Lord, an unchanging point of reference. [900 proverbs in the Book]<\/span><\/li>\n
    • Each proverb generally has one single truth to convey.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      PURPOSE AND THEME<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

        \n
      • The purpose of Proverbs is to: <\/span><\/li>\n
      • Impart moral discernment and discretion & Develop mental clarity and perception (1:2b, 6)<\/span><\/li>\n
      • The theme of Proverbs is found in 1:7a, “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge.” To fear God is to stand in awe of His righteousness, and for us to trust in our Creator.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

        DATE<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

          \n
        • Solomon wrote proverbs about 931 BC. He didn\u2019t write ALL Proberbs: Hezekiel\/others<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

          GENERAL THEMES<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

            \n
          • Righteousness, wickedness, foolishness, simplicity, wisdom, laziness, diligence, pride, humility, justice, alcohol, speech, anger, money, friendships, and parental instruction\/need to discipline.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

            SURVEY <\/span><\/b>The book of Proverbs can be subdivided into five sections<\/span><\/p>\n

            OLD PROVERBS<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n

              \n
            • A friend in need is a friend indeed.<\/span><\/li>\n
            • A stitch in time saves nine.<\/span><\/li>\n
            • Absence makes the heart grow fonder.<\/span><\/li>\n
            • As you sow, so you shall reap.<\/span><\/li>\n
            • Beauty is only skin deep.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

              Verse 2<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

              [2]<\/span><\/b><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>To know wisdom and instruction; to perceive the words of understanding; <\/span><\/p>\n

              To know<\/span><\/em>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u2014 Written to help men to know throughly and practically. Both human wisdom to conduct our affairs in this life, and Divine wisdom.<\/span><\/p>\n

              \u00b7\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span>Instruction<\/span><\/em>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u2014 The instructions delivered either by God, or men, in order to the attainment of wisdom.<\/span><\/p>\n

              \u00b7\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span>To perceive<\/span><\/em>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u2014 Which teach a man true understanding.<\/span><\/p>\n

              Verse 3<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

              [3]<\/span><\/b><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>To receive the instruction of wisdom, justice, and judgment, and equity;<\/span><\/p>\n

              To receive<\/span><\/em>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u2014 Willing to receive the counsels of others. Such as makes men wise and prudent, and to teach just judgments or equity.<\/span><\/p>\n

              Verse 4<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

              [4]<\/span><\/b>\u00a0To give subtilty to the simple, to the young man knowledge and discretion.<\/span><\/p>\n

              Simple<\/span><\/i>\u00a0\u2014 Such as want wisdom.<\/span><\/p>\n

              Young man<\/span><\/i>\u00a0\u2014 Who wants both experience and self-government.<\/span><\/p>\n

              Verse 5<\/span><\/b><\/b><\/p>\n

              [5]<\/span><\/b>\u00a0A wise man will hear, and will increase learning; and a man of understanding shall attain unto wise counsels:<\/span><\/p>\n

              Will hear<\/span><\/i>\u00a0\u2014 Is willing to learn.<\/span><\/p>\n

              Attain to<\/span><\/i>\u00a0\u2014 The art of governing himself or others.<\/span><\/p>\n

              Verse 7<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

              \u00a0<\/span>[7]<\/span><\/b>\u00a0The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge: but fools despise wisdom and instruction.<\/span><\/p>\n

              The fear<\/span><\/i>\u00a0\u2014 Reverence and obedience to God.<\/span><\/p>\n

              Beginning<\/span><\/i>\u00a0\u2014 The foundation without which all other knowledge is vain.<\/span><\/p>\n

              Fools<\/span><\/i>\u00a0\u2014 That is, wicked men, are so far from attaining true wisdom, that they despise it, and all the means of getting it.<\/span><\/p>\n

              Chapter One sets the tone for the remainder of the Book of Proverbs. God wants all of us to learn wisdom, knowledge and understanding from the principles found in the Proverbs. Satan is the god of this system, and is full of deception: His children are deceiving and being deceived; while the children of God are called to be as wise as a serpent and as harmless as a dove.<\/b><\/p>\n
